On February 7th, Youth Dance Ensemble (YDE) members past and present met together at the Proud Bird Restaurant to celebrate LWDT’s 30th Anniversary.
Over 100 YDE members and their families attended the event and enjoyed a buffet meal that included a huge assortment of seafood, Mexican and American foods, and desserts.
Each participant stood and introduced themselves, sharing their experiences dancing with YDE. One student, Mawiyah Dowd, dressed up as Lula Washington and acted out Lula conducting rehearsal in class and correcting students — making everybody laugh.
The students also performed choreography going back several decades, including Lula’s “I Feel God’s Spirit” and Kenny Long’s “This Day.” Lula joined current Youth Dance Ensemble members in dancing “I Feel God’s Spirit.”
The event closed with an awards ceremony, honoring both current YDE members and alums. Many of the former YDE members now have children of their own.
The event was coordinated by Roshada Baldwin, assisted by Tahia Rollins, both YDE alums.
