Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) will host its 2011 Kwanzaa Celebration on Thurs. Dec. 29, and Fri., Dec. 30, at 7 pm at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, 4718 W. Washington Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90016 (just east of La Brea Ave.).
The show will feature African drumming and dancing by Lula Washington’s students, Youth Dance Ensemble, and members of the acclaimed Lula Washington Dance Theatre international touring company.
Kwanzaa is a social holiday (not a religious one), that celebrates African culture and values. The performance and celebration are open to ALL audiences regardless of religion, race, etc. Every year, Kwanzaa is celebrated for seven days, from Dec 26 to Jan 1. Lula Washington Dance Theatre always produces its Kwanzaa concert and celebration in the week between Christmas and New Year’s.
Each day of Kwanzaa celebrates a different principle. LWDT will perform on the 4th and 5th days of Kwanzaa. The 4th day of Kwanzaa focuses on the principle of “Ujamaa”, cooperative economics. The 5th day centers on the principle of “Nia”, which means purpose.
Ticket prices are $40 for the general public; $25 for senior citizens and students; and $100 for VIP seats, which support LWDT Youth Dance Scholarships. VIP ticket holders get priority seating, access to a private VIP reception at 6 pm each night, and recognition in the program and on stage.
Tickets can be purchased at the Lula Washington Dance Theater Studio. For information call the studio at: 323-292-5852.
