LWDT gets good review at San Jose Jazz Festival

The Lula Washington Dance Theatre received a glowing review for its concert Aug. 11 at the San Jose Jazz Festival.

Chris J. Walker wrote a review of the entire festival for the Jazz Times and summed up each artists’ performance. He had this to say about LWDT.

“Vastly different from all of them was a special collaboration of the Lula Washington Dance Theatre with drummer Marcus L. Miller and his Freedom Jazz Movement. The group’s music both stimulated the audience and provided sweeping backdrops for the dance troupe’s impressive moves. “Venus and Serena,” a tribute to the champion tennis playing sisters, was amazing and a unique standout.”

The band members included: Marcus L. Miller on drums; Bobby Bryant on alto sax; Bobby Pierce, Keyboards; and Lester McFarland on Bass.

The program included Tamica’s “In The Garden”; and Lula’s works: “We Wore the Mask”; “Spontaneous Combustion” and “Random Thoughts.” Marcus’s band members played live for each work with the exception of Random Thoughts. This work is set to music by Terrence Blanchard. Lula and Terrence will perform together live Feb. 2, 2013 at The Smith Center in Las Vegas.
