Lula Washington premiered her new “Random Thoughts” at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert this November. The 45-minute work to music by Terrence Blanchard drew a very positive review from music and dance critic Bruce Fessier from the “My Desert.com” online publication.
His review on Nov. 18, 2013 said this, in part:
“I was enthralled by “We Wore the Mask,” to a tape and live music by drummer Marcus Miller, and the new “Random Thoughts” to great jazz by trumpeter Terrence Blanchard.”
“The choreography was a beautiful match for Blanchard’s music — initially keeping to the beat but stretching like an extended trumpet solo and then coming back to the theme before getting too far out on a limb. Even with bare feet, the patter sounded like jazz tap. Just brilliant,” Fessier wrote.
“Random Thoughts” is an outgrowth of the “Choices” project that Lula Washington and Terrence Blanchard worked on together at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010.
