Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) will host its “Dance All Day!” festival on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 am to 7 pm on its outdoor parking lot stage at the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Coliseum Street. It will feature a a full day of free dance performances, a New Orleans Second Line band; a personal trainer to lead a free work-out session, free dance classes, and games for children to play. The schedule is as follows:
10 am to noon: Festival of Tutus, featuring baby ballerinas from the LWDT school and free sample dance classes for children and youth in a variety of disciplines from ballet to African.
Noon to 1 pm: Dion The Trainer, the work out coach for Jennifer Lopez and other celebrities, will lead a free fitness session that will include kick boxing; stretching and core work in a fun, fat-burning, toning, wellness promoting manner.
1 pm – 2 pm: Gospel praise dance showcase. See One Body Dance Company; U-Jah-Zee Dance Ensemble, Lula Washington Dance Theatre and others using gospel music to propel their dance.
2 pm – 3 pm: Youth Dance Showcase featuring Debbie Allen’s Redbird Youth Ensemble; Hamilton High School dancers; Kidd & Hip Hop Crew; Lula Washington’s Children’s Dance Ensemble; and more…
3:30 – 4:30 pm: Gregg Wright and his New Orleans Blues Band will perform a concert of modern blues and New Orleans style music. Gregg is in the Louisiana Musical Hall of Fame and is known as “the King of Rockin’ Blues”. His set would end with a New Orleans Second Line dance.
4:30 pm – 7:00 pm: A line-up of dance performances by Lula Washington Dance Theatre and other local dance groups including students from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy from 4:30 pm to 7 pm.
“Dance All Day” happens at the same time as the Taste of Soul street festival on Crenshaw Boulevard, but the event is separate and independent of Taste of Soul.
