WASHINGTON FAMILY CONCERT CELEBRATES SOUTHWEST COLLEGE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Lula Washington Dance Theatre will perform as part of the Washington Family concert celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Los Angeles Southwest College. The co0ncert will be performed in the campus’s newly remodeled 400-seat theater. The date is Saturday, April 22 @ 8 pm.
Joining Lula will be nephew Kamasi Washington and his Next Step Band, along with brother-in-law, Rickey Washington (Kamasi’s Dad). Rickey, who tours with Kamasi, will perform his own original music with his own supporting band. Kamasi will join his dad on selected works of Rickey’s.
Lula’s daughter, Tamica Washington-Miller, will present new work on the show; and her husband, Marcus L. Miller, will provide music for both mother and daughter. The event is being coordinated by Erwin Washington, the elder of the Washington brothers.
Lula and nephew, Kamasi Washington will team up again. They performed together in 2015 at the Smith Center in Las Vegas. Kamasi toured in China and in US cities playing for the dance company in Marcus L. Miller’s band, Freedom Jazz Movement. At Southwest, Lula will provide dance for two of Kamasi’s hit tunes, Re-run Home and The Rhythm Changes. This is the only performance by the combined family that is currently scheduled.
Visual art and a photographic essay of the creative family will be available at the concert courtesy of Osofu Washington and Imani Washington (Kamasi’s brother and half-sister)
