Lula Washington Dance Theatre believes that everyone should be able to experience the art of dance. Whether it is through direct participation or watching performances, we believe that dance is an integral part of students’ educational development.
Educational outreach is very important to Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) and our mission. We make it a point to engage with local K-12 public, private, and charter schools. Even when our company tours to national and international theaters, we work with presenters to promote community engagement through master classes, workshops, seminars, public forums, special projects, and more.
LWDT works with the Music Center on Tour, which books the company for performances at K-12 schools in the Greater Los Angeles Area and throughout Southern California. Performances occur during assemblies as part of the normal school day. LWDT brings educational, historical, cultural, and inspiring dance to all the schools we attend, book us today through the Music Center on Tour website.
Lula Washington played an integral role in the late 1980’s as LA’s BEST was being piloted. Today, LWDT is proud to be participating in this important program. We send company dancers into LA’s BEST campuses to teach a range of dance styles to K-5 students, the program is 2 days a week after normal school hours, and is completely free for the participants!

Reflections in Black is a suite of dances choreographed by Lula Washington and selected choreographers. Through dance, music, song, poetry, and personal statements, this suite explores and reflects on the Black experience in the United States, and African American culture and history, including: Harriet Tubman, the Civil Rights Movement, social justice in the present, a celbration of blues, jazz, and , and the global African Diaspora. The pieces of the suite are interchangeable and are arranged for each presentation. This suite can be 5-minutes (one dance), or up to a 90-minute concert.
